What You Should Know About Phishing Scams
Phishing attacks involve the mass distribution of fraudulent e-mail messages and web sites, cleverly designed to look authentic, in order to fool recipients into disclosing personal financial data such as credit card numbers, bank account information, social security numbers, passwords, and other sensitive information.
How to spot and avoid phishing scams:
- Be suspicious of any e-mail with urgent requests for personal information. Take the time to check out requests closely. If you suspect a message is not authentic, don't use the link embedded in the e-mail to get to the web page.
- Always insure that you are using a secure web page. Look for the "lock" icon on the browser's status bar, or a URL for a website that begins with https — the "s" stands for secure.
- Make sure that your browser and security programs are up-to-date and all security patches are implemented.
